This breed is thought to have been developed in the Victorian era and may be descended from the Tweed Water Spaniel, Yellow Retriever, Wavy-coated Retriever, Flat-coated Retriever, and Red Setter.

After years of crossing different breeds, Dudley Marjoribanks, Lord Tweedmouth, is widely acknowledged as having produced the first dogs that would later be known as the Golden Retriever. However, historical records imply that the Golden Retriever existed before Lord Tweedmouth started breeding them on his Scottish estate. The English Kennel Club began categorizing these dogs as Retriever-Yellow or Golden in 1911, and Retriever-Golden became the official name in 1920.

The first Golden Retrievers were registered as foundation stock by the American Kennel Club in 1925. In 1932, they received official AKC breed recognition. Due to their appearances in Hollywood films like Homeward Bound and Air Bud, the Golden Retriever has become one of the most well-known and recognizable dog breeds.
